How to choose the right stainless steel cutlery?

The main criteria to take into account when choosing your stainless steel cutlery are the following:

  • the type of stainless steel (18/0, 18/8, 18/10...),

  • manufacturing (cut or forged),

  • polishing (finishing cutlery ).

Whether your use of these cutlery is professional or daily, it is important to consider their robustness! Indeed, in both cases, they must be both durable and easy to clean.

Types of stainless steel

Wondering what the numbers on the stainless steel cutlery mean? They indicate the amount of chromium and nickel. Chromium increases resistance to oxidation, while nickel provides shine. Thus, depending on the alloy of which the metal is made, its properties will be different.

Our advice: choose 18/10 stainless steel for your stainless steel cutlery , which is extremely resistant to corrosion, or 18/0 stainless steel. The latter, sharper and easier to sharpen, does not contain nickel. It will therefore be less shiny than 18/10 stainless steel. Both types of stainless steel are dishwasher safe.

Should I choose cut or forged cutlery?

Cutlery can be made in two different ways, depending on the design you are looking for.

Cast or cut cutlery is created from sheets of stainless steel. This is the manufacturing method that allows the most imagination in the designs and patterns. It is therefore very common.

Cutlery can also be forged, that is, made from stainless steel bars. This is the case with tubular cutlery , since this method makes it possible to create round, oval or square cutlery .

How to maintain your stainless steel cutlery?

Here are some tips for caring for your stainless steel cutlery .

  • Tip #1 for maintaining your cutlery for a long time: rinse it well and clean it directly after each meal.

If you want to run a dishwasher, you can also rinse them out before it starts so nothing dries on the cutlery . We remind you that cooking acids are particularly bad for stainless steel.

  • Tip #2: Avoid pouring too much product into your dishwasher. Indeed, too much dishwashing liquid is harmful and attacks the stainless steel of your cutlery . Stainless steel washes very easily, so you don't have to use a lot of it. Space them out so they don't scratch each other.

  • Tip #3: Once your dishwasher has finished running, empty it as soon as possible because humidity and heat are bad for cutlery . You can also wipe them down if your dishwasher isn't drying them enough.

Finally, what if your stainless steel cutlery is stained? You can use certain products dedicated to this use or take a soft cotton cloth on which you put white vinegar.
