Recipe for cranberry and apple crisp
So, for the rest of the month, I'm going to share some new holiday-inspired recipes with you. Starting with this absolutely delicious Cranberry Apple Crumble! This is such a humble and comforting dessert! And it's absolutely delicious with a few scoops of vanilla ice cream on top!
What is a crisp?
If you've never made a crispy recipe, you might be wondering what to expect! So allow me to lift the veil of mystery and explain to you the simple glory of a crisp !
In short, a crisp usually consists of a juicy fruit filling and a buttery crisp filling.
Here, our fruit base is made with cranberries, apples, orange zest and juice, sugar, flour, and a few warm spices like ginger, cardamom , and cinnamon. The combination of brown sugar and granulated sugar adds depth to the flavor, so I highly suggest using both if you can!
And then there's the buttered oat filling! Made with rolled oats, sugar, cinnamon, flour and butter, it comes together in minutes and sprinkles over the cranberry-apple mixture!
The next and final step is cooking! You can use a large 23x33cm baking dish or a large cast iron skillet, and you can save a mixing bowl by making the cranberry-apple mixture right in the dish! No need to spray cooking spray, but a dab of butter will help prevent the dough from sticking !
Cook until the fruit is tender, bubbling and smelling intoxicating! It will take about 55-60 minutes , but the wait is worth it. And since it's the "holidays", why not kill time by preparing a cranberry and apple moscow mule ?!
Once the dish is out of the oven, serve it hot , with whipped cream or ice cream!
This recipe can serve a crowd if you need it! If you put about a third of a cup in each bowl, you should get about 10 servings! That said...I saw 4 people gobble up an entire skillet, so be prepared for this recipe to fly off the table! The good news ? You can always cook two pans at the same time, if necessary!
