When it comes to French toast, I find people either love it...or hate it. I rarely come across anyone with average passion on the subject. And I think the reason is simple.

People who love French toast have experienced the euphoric pleasure of tasting a real good French toast. The kind that's thick, golden and crispy in all the right places. While the haters have probably only known sad, soggy slices of sandwich bread that no amount of maple syrup can save.

Today, I hope to eliminate the latter from the story! Because making restaurant-quality French toast at home is so easy, and it's made with staple ingredients you might have in your kitchen right now!

Of course bonus points if you have fresh berries and quality maple syrup . Because in my experience, they make almost everything a little better.

What type of bread is best for French toast?

I'm sure there are a lot of divided opinions out there, but personally and professionally, I think brioche and challah are the best candidates for making delicious French toast!

That said, French bread is also a great candidate. And I heard Texas toast can be delicious.

But do not use sandwich bread! It is too thin and will not do this recipe justice.

Best Easy Homemade French Toast

preparation 15 mins + cooking 15 mins = total 30 mins

Ingredients ( 4 servings)

  • 1/2 cup butter

  • 4 large eggs plus 4 large egg yolks

  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 2 and 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar

  • 1 tbsp and 1/2 tbsp light brown sugar

  • 1/2 cup of milk

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract

  • 10 slices of challah bread or brioche, sliced ​​2cm thick

Instructions

  • Melt a few tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

  • In a large shallow bowl or pie plate, whisk eggs and egg yolks until well blended. Add the cinnamon, nutmeg and both sugars, and whisk until well blended. Finally, whisk in the milk, heavy cream and vanilla.

  • Dip as many slices of bread as you can into the egg mixture, letting each side soak in the mixture for about 2 minutes.

  • Place the soaked bread slices in the prepared skillet and cook until the underside is golden brown, about 3 minutes. Flip them over and continue cooking on the other side until they are also golden brown, about 3 to 4 minutes more. Continue with all the French toast, adding more butter to the pan as needed.


Serve hot , with maple syrup and fresh berries!
